"Let me start by
saying I think this is an excellent book. I found
it to be very genuine and thoughtful. While
reading Doug's story, you find yourself thinking
about your own life. I found myself looking back
on life- the ups and the downs- and while his
experiences were much different than mine, they
were still easy to relate to. And although some
of his experiences were very extreme and rare,
they provoked a lot of thought. He has been down
a rough road and came through with an incredible
amount of strength and wisdom. As a prevention
professional, I found that Doug shows tremendous
resiliency and is a great role model for young
people. I highly recommend this book for anyone
of any age. It's an easy read that will make you
stop and think about your life, realize what you
have to be thankful for, and know that despite
hard times, you can overcome your
obstacles."

"Beyond the Board isn't just
for skaters. It's not even just for teenagers.
It's for parents, uncles, mentors - anyone who
needs to hear a story not unlike their own, one
where a guy actually follows his dreams and makes
it work."
"Beyond the Board is
a down to earth outpouring Dougs life
journey. Its honesty is relatable to the
youth of today conveying perseverance to follow
your life goals, no matter what bumps you may hit
along the road. Dougs optimistic spirit is
an inspiration to never give up doing what you
love to do. I admire his respect and
acknowledgment for all of the people that played
a vital roll in the ride of his life. His passion
for keeping youth motivated, as well as drug and
alcohol free, is an encouragement. It is evident
in the pages of this book that Doug is a man of
integrity, who lives what he stands for."

"The concepts Doug Brown tells us about
aren't all brand new. But the way he says them
and the authenticity they carry hasn't ever been
done before. Kids listen when you stop thinking
of them as kids and let them label themselves,
and Beyond the Board is a guidebook
through the confusion of not only adolescence,
but life in general."
"Inspirational and genuine"

"Doug Brown: Beyond the Board interested
me partially because I love to read memoirs and
autobiographies, but for personal reasons as
well. Having a little brother who skated as an
outlet and living under the veil of death,
addictions, and recovery drew me to learn more
about the Skate Straight program. I learned of
what Doug Brown does before I read this and found
out who he IS. To find out in the first few pages
that I could connect with the author made this a
book I'll definitely read more than once. I
recommend to anyone who has had to find out who
they are [or who is still searching] and overcome
tough circumstances."
